The One Type of Gizmodo Blogger

My team brought me this idea in response to a post about Best Buy employees on Gizmodo yesterday. Frankly, I didn’t think it was that funny and wasn’t sure it aligned with my core values. I was excited though that the team was thinking about new ways to use new media so I have decided to support their thinking and publish it. So I will be curious to hear your feedback.

We are not sure how many of you read  Gizmodo, the uber gear and tech blog, but those of you who do read it likely noticed this post yesterday. While we would argue that the employees of Best Buy are far too diverse to fit into one of 7 categories (aspiring musicians, perhaps?), it was a pretty funny post. We couldn’t resist taking a stab at classifying the seven types of Gizmodo bloggers, but then we realized there’s really only one type of Gizmodo blogger. Here’s that description:

gizmodo.blogger

You’ll find this guy on his couch, sporting an ironic t-shirt with a delivery-food stain of some kind. He “commuted” minutes earlier by rolling out of bed and over to his laptop in his shoebox-sized Brooklyn (Williamsburg) apartment littered with empty Redbull cans. He came to Gizmodo 9 months ago after deciding that “traditional media” wasn’t edgy enough (read: required pants and didn’t like it when he powered down walls of TVs). He only puts on pants in order to put electronics down them, and he gets very upset if you mess with his Star Wars legos. He genuinely believes that the hot PR girl is into him and not just trying to get a post. He overuses the word “fail.”

I think it’s hilarious, because it feels like it’s delivered with a wink and a nod. The Gizmodo team gets it (see their rebuttal: http://gizmodo.com/5312051/best-buy-cmo-barry-judge-responds-with-the-one-type-of-gizmodo-blogger ).

The following statement:
“Frankly, I didn’t think it was that funny and wasn’t sure it aligned with my core values. ” really just sucked all the life out of the joke, and turns a nice zinger into a “I hope I’m not offending my core audience of geeks” piece of deadwood.

Of course, maybe you’re delivering that line with the deadpan delivery only a true comic could hope to achieve, and I’m not clever enough to follow. In which case, Bravo!

Quite possibly the largest waste of both time and money/resources I have seen…But am I surprised? Absolutely not! I, and other readers “laughed” at the article posted about best buy employees because it is for the most part true. You should be more concerned with positively challenging these “personalities” to perform to the best of their ability in a fashion that is consistent with customer service. I have actually had employees (while i was shopping) tell me how much they hate working at best buy because of this, that, or the next reason.

Gizmodo bloggers get paid to be snarky, live at home, and review “tech”.

Best Buy Chiefs should be concerned with delivering the best products for the lowest prices, not this childish crap (excuse my language)

Sincerely,

A Disappointed Customer

BrianJuly 10th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

The really sad part is he thought the original Gizmodo post wasn’t funny.

Something really has to be wrong with you if you can’t find humor in that.

Maybe that’s why so many people make fun of BB

JasonJuly 10th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

SimonJuly 10th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Good on you for putting this back up. I think it shows a lot of character when a company can have a little bit of fun with the bloggers that cover them.

BNortonJuly 10th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Barry, I think you need to walk into one of your stores and take a hard look at your employees. Every Best Buy I have ever been in has been made up with the exact people that are described in the gizmodo article. If you want I can travel to any one of my local best buys and take pictures of the employees fitting the description.

send9July 10th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

It’s funny, Barry, and as you can see by the Giz post, it was taken in good stride (or so I assume, I have no affiliation with them.) But the point is that this sort of post shows that you’re connected with the Internet culture, and that even a large corporation has a sense of humor. I can’t speak for others, but to me it increases my image of your company, and I am sure that goes along with one of your core values.

EricJuly 10th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

I think your team was right. I thought it was funny, and I found out about your reply via Gizmodo so obviously they took the joke in good spirits and they even threw out a photo to try to match your picture.

BizzyJuly 10th, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Barry,

You really shouldn’t take what Gizmodo says lightly.

I think we all have encountered a Best Buy employee like the ones shown on the Gizmodo post. And if that is the case, then we don’t see Best Buy as a customer-friendly place. Instead, we associate Best Buy as a store which is suspicious, untrustworthy, shady, etc.

Instead of making jokes about this, I think as the CMO of Best Buy–if you really are the CMO–should take this seriously as start cracking on down the employees which tarnish Best Buy’s name.

Best Buy should start behaving like a real company, not a sleazy joint which hires high school students and dropouts who live in their parents’ basement. You can start doing this by making more stringent demands on how professionally employees should represent Best Buy.

DeannaDJuly 10th, 2009 at 4:21 pm

You get points for agility of response and a reasonable amount of wit but you lose them all for the combination of “my team brought me” and “wasn’t sure it aligned with my core values”. Either you support them and take a calculated risk with you in point or you don’t: mealy-mouthed caveats just look like attempts to position yourself for plausible denial should it all go wrong later (’it was the new-hire comms assistant, honest!’).

Hello NewEgg!!!! Now there is company (online or not) who knows what true, helpful, non back stabbing, customer is always right, customer service is all about.

I just made myself dizzy…..

Gotta go grab another Red Bull and tell everyone I know to stay away from Best Buy.

Cheers Barry….. way to alienate a good majority of your customers and employees… FAIL

claraJuly 10th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

Unless you personally know gizmodo bloggers, it doesn’t really work. It might be true.

Gizmodo’s Best Buy parody works because everyone has shopped at best buy and come across interesting personalities which have any of these characteristics.

Plus, best buy employees can be annoying, which begs being made fun of — for example, six theatre “specialists” persistently asking to help me but persistently demonstrating a lack of critical knowledge about the products. Leave me alone, I don’t want your help!

ColumbusJuly 10th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Well done sir. Don’t shy away from taking shots at others like this. The new media way is a “all is fair in love and war” style. Use it.

AliasPJuly 10th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

I’m amazed you didn’t spend a little more time proofreading the article before you re-posted it.
Y’know, in case of any self-contradictions that may be in the opening 2 paragraphs.

“My team brought me this idea in response to a post about Best Buy employees on Gizmodo yesterday. Frankly, I didn’t think it was that funny and wasn’t sure it aligned with my core values.”

“While we would argue that the employees of Best Buy are far too diverse to fit into one of 7 categories (aspiring musicians, perhaps?), it was a pretty funny post. ”

So now you have your audience confused, which is never a good thing. Did you, or did you not find the Giz post funny? Where you might think this a small & ignorable detail, I find it to be very crucial to your claim and how you react to such posts that are intended merely for humor sake.

Honestly, sir, for being a “CMO of Best Buy”, you’re not impressing me too much with the poor attention to your own writings. If you can’t keep an eye on something like this, I’m scared to know how you handle your day-to-day job.

DGJuly 10th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

Very funny post, but forget the “core values” stuff. Too much CYA.

You’re core values either include having a sense of humor (which I suspect they do), or they don’t. If you’re the CMO of a firm like best buy, you need to not just connect to the snark and sense of fun, but also to embrace them. Somewhere in there is one of your primary customer archetypes. The other types of BB customers will never read this and never care.

I do agree – without the first paragraph this was a riot and showed that a corporate representative could give as well as he/she could take. It was ballsy, at first, to respond directly but then the “i don’t think its funny but my TEAM does” seems needless at best and cowardly at worst.

it’s refreshing to that theres a human on the other side of the corporate wall. you “got it” that gizmodo tried to get a few chuckles at your expense and clearly with a well displayed sense of humor you responded. So bravo. And yes this entire situation, at least makes me want to take a stroll through best ; for if nothing else tan to observe the 7 types of employees.

Note: The new intro sucks. the corporate speak doesn’t vibe with blogging scene. for the lovers of corporate speak, there’s still traditional media and PR releases, go back to those.

Phatlip12July 10th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Just make sure you don’t really talk about taking responsibility, or the roles of a leader. Because after you shirk the idea of a possibly-unpopular post off on to your “staff”(not that they might exist, but that you’re blaming a vague people), I would not have any respect for anything you had to say on the subject.

I’ll bet you also take credit for your “staff’s” achievements. Man, I would hate working for you.

Granted, I’m anonymous, and you put your name on this, but figured I’d throw two pennies into the ring.

JasonJuly 11th, 2009 at 3:54 am

Barry, I was impressed with your response and thought..”wow, the best buy folks are catching up with the times and being, well… cool” and then you took the post down ::FAIL:: and then put it back up with an intro/explanation saying “I didn’t think it was that funny and wasn’t sure it aligned with my core values” What kind of corporate B.S. think outside the paradigm buzz phrase crap is that? If I was your superior I’d fire your a** for giving people the impression that you might actually be human (instead of an empty SUIT) and then pulling the rug out from under us.

Thanks, I think I’ll take my ca$h elsewhere for electronics… and to think – you were so close to being as cool as gizmodo and actually relevant. “Missed it by *that* much”

AnonymousJuly 11th, 2009 at 4:04 am

The irony in this blog post is killing me! Too much presumptuous crap, not enough well-rounded, ambiguous description. Take jokes in stride, matey.

Nice post barry, unfortunatly Gizmodo, and it’s fanboi population thinks thier original post was acceptable. I found it to be good, with exception to the geeksquad section. They obviously don’t know about our strict data protection policies, and how much further as a company we have come in the last few years in this area.

In my opinion, that section of the post can acctually be considered slander/libel, as it would acctually deter me from using those services if I was a uninformed reader (like the majority of Gizmodo readers). Im not saying Best Buy has a perfect reputation, there have been incidents, and people have been handeled accordingly. People have to understand, when issues like this happened, It was against corporate policies, these people were acting of thier own stupidity. It is like blaming the post office because someone steals your mail, it makes no sense.

Consideirng bestbuy probably sees more than 2000 computer’s a day company wide, I believe we have a lot less issues per 1000 computers than any other company.

dear exec: your core values don’t match many other’s people values,it’s not what it’s about here, a good sense of humor and some self derision will do wonder to make best buy cooler, edgier and more human and trust me everyone will be better off.

“aligned with my core values”, “team” Are you serious? Do you have a single thought that doesn’t originate from some cheap ‘how to manage’ book, or are you completely incapable of independent thinking?

Tip: Go to a real university (and actually graduate), then go do something that will a) allow you to maintain your integrity, b) give you something to be truly proud of. And c) help you to stop thinking and speaking like a complete idiot.

That being said, you guys at best buy really do only have a handful of employee types. He wasn’t exaggerating much.

How about those UNICRU employment application surveys?

Those ones corporate retailers, such as BestBuy, use to weed out any potential employees that aren’t completely spineless and subservient. BestBuy truly has only one type of employee on the retail floor. The spineless wage slave.

Also, BestBuy profiles its customers into one of 5 personalities. So I guess only 5 kinds of people shop at BestBuy? No, only one kind of person shops at BestBuy, and that’s the kind that doesn’t know they could have gotten whatever it was for half the price at newegg.com.

700% markup on ethernet cables. That’s the BestBuy way.

So i have a question for Barry Judge. How is it that your employees are so diverse that they cannot be fit into 7 categories, but with your “customer centricity” initiative you classify your customers into 5. I dont know about you but that math is wrong, there are definitely more bby customers than there are employees. I think gizmodo was just following your example of generalizing your employees as you generalize your customers. Oh and FAIL.

DevJuly 12th, 2009 at 12:06 am

Hah I love the Aspiring musician quip. I could be an aspiring astronaut but working at Best Buy wouldn’t get me any closer and the wage made there is laughable for the crap your employees have to put up with from both the inside and outside sources.

I’m sure there were some brown nosing underlings that are trying to be noticed and said this would be a fantastic idea and to a point it was entertaining but like another poster said you really need to take a look at some of the people you hire and stop going to the best performing stores in La Jolla or other “nicer” places and hit the more obscure and I’m sure you will be surprised.

I thought the 7 Kinds of Best Buy Employee’s bit was hilarious.

Your response was even funnier! Way to go! I just wish you hadn’t added the disclaimer to it. There’s no need to apologize Barry.

dotlizardJuly 12th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

This was much, much better in the original, pre-disclaimer version. The addition of the serious corporate jargon takes away from the humor, which, by itself, showed a wonderful thick-skinned, confident attitude. When life gives you viral attention and an opportunity to chime in on the meme, go with it, is my advice.

Gizmodo’s response (to the original) was awesome and showed they had a sense of humor about themselves, and the combination of the three posts is the stuff that most viral marketing efforts can only dream of, and I honestly cannot see what harm it does to Best Buy to play along without apologizing and backpedaling. Getting written about in Gizmodo involves being snarked about — they snark, it’s what they do — but it also involves a great deal of traffic and publicity. Rising to the occasion by showing a sense of humor about yourself/your company equals making the best of that publicity.

I agree with several comments, Barry. Your original post was spot on. I read Gizmodo religiously and shop at Best Buy once in a while (let’s say, when I actually buy new electronics, I usually get them there), and I thought your response was clever and sharp. Those Giz guys don’t cut anyone any slack, and it showed some moxie to roll with the punches and give them a poke back. However, when you reposted and added the “disclaimer” at the top, it took a bit o’ wind out of your sails. Next time, stick with the original post and don’t try to patronize the audience or hedge to avoid blowback. Nice work!

the real issue here is the spotty experiences consumers are having with Blue Shirts. For me most have been average, a couple have been great and several have sucked. Until there’s feedback from the consumer and accountability by Best Buy, I think you’ll have a tough time solving this.
