Mofilm and efforts in recycling

Early in the year, I talked about our promise to make a difference through our recycling efforts as a company. It’s astonishing that the US discards an estimated 400 million units of electronics each year, according to the US EPA and we recognize our ability to help make a difference. We work hard at delivering that promise every day through our commitment to be “Greener Together” with our customers.

One of the most important ways we try to make a difference is by providing our customers an environmentally responsible way to dispose of electronics through our Trade-In and In-store recycling. For nearly a decade, we’ve offered a variety of recycling options in all of our US stores. In just our first year of our latest program, where consumers can drop off items at our stores for recycling, we’re going to recycle more than 1 million units, or more than 50 million pounds. We know this makes a difference, but there’s more to do.

You may remember that we sponsored MOFILM as part of the Cannes Film Festival a few months ago and received more than 30 original 90-second shorts from aspiring creatives around the world. You can see the winning submission below.

To help us continue to communicate our recycling efforts in new ways, we decided to make recycling and sustainability the key focal point for the brief at the London MOFILM competition now in progress.

You can view the creative brief at the MOFILM.com Web site then click on the Best Buy logo. The call for submissions is open right now and we’re ready for your creative energy.

To help inspire our budding creatives, we talked with Alex Bogusky from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky , our Brand agency, about the MOFILM competition and our commitment. Check out the video below.

Tell me what you think about our efforts and how we can continue to play a role in building a sustainable future.

Best Buy is typical of the incredible over consumption in the west, and in the US in particular. Recycling can often use more energy than making the initial product. Reduction and reuse are much more effective. I have an article on this here:

Recycling is the best way to save our planet from destruction and climate change. It is good to see a company that do their best to recycle everything as much as they can. Why don’t you try solar electricity at home for a cheap price? It can be considered as recycled energy.
