Emerging Media Role – The Crowdsourced Job Posting is Live

We’ve gone through all of your ideas, added some of our own, and we’ve posted the job opening for the Senior Manager Emerging Media Marketing on our careers site.

For those of you who submitted ideas, your contributions will be largely found in the qualifications section specifically. After all, the qualification of 250+ twitter followers is what started us down this road in the first place. We haven’t taken your qualification ideas and copied them down to the letter. Instead we tried to take the essence of them where appropriate and incorporate the combined spirit of them into the posting.

At some point in the future, after we’ve made our hire, we’ll share our thoughts on why we chose what we did, what informed those decisions, as well as some other elements that we’ve included in our process (from your ideas) that we can’t give out at this stage.

What can’t be lost in this process is that the job description and posting, while a critical element in getting to our hire, is still only a part of the process. Interview questions, interview process, the interviewers, and our vetting process are equally important elements.

Thanks once again to all those who contributed ideas, thoughts and commentary to this conversation.

Go check out the posting, refer the social media super heroes you know to it, and maybe we’ll see you in an interview.

Side note: We also have an opening currently for a Senior Manager of Search Marketing.  This person will run our Search Marketing practice. This person will also  work closely with my team, and whoever we hire for the Emerging Media role. Feel free to share that with your Search Marketing super hero friends. (We won’t be crowd-sourcing that description.)

Well, you’ve achieved your goal; the job desciption definitely sounds user-generated. It’s much more comprehensive 101. The previous job description was a bit fragmented. You’ve focused on the primary tenets of a social media guru, though I do have to say that you can certainly analyze brand sentiment without the use of Radian6, Nielsen BuzzMetrics, Techrigy, etc. The analytics report will just be a little less sophisticated.

Nice work with the publicity on this, too!

Also Barry, what I really like about this approach is that you allowed social media enthusiasts to be the ones who generated the content, thus making it more personal and approachable, more transparent, and more participatory. Like I said on Twitter before, I bet you’ll get lots of applications :)

BTW, love IdeaX wiki!

RE: RICKY RUBIO

Barry, as a someone who studied advertising and marketing in college (almost became a copywriter), but became a psychologist (practicing now) instead, and is a huge NBA fan, let me give you my opinion on Ricky Rubio:

This guy is going to be a marketing beast. Thanks to Youtube and the Olympic Gold Medal Basketball game, he has become an underground legend. The flashiness and originality of his game make him a draw even for the casual fan. And his floppy haired good looks have made him become a Jonas Brothers type figure to teenage girls. For any company that targets young people, such as Best Buy, Ricky Rubio would be the perfect endorser. Not to mention, this guy has the chance to be a hall of fame, MVP type player. He’s a prodigy. Because of the universal following he has already established, I don’t see it mattering too much that he will be playing in a market such as Minneapolis, instead of say, New York. More important will be that he’s on a winning team, and playing late inTO playoffs. Minnesota is developing the kind of young, dynomite team that has a good chance, with Ricky, to get to that level.

So to sum up, in my opinion Ricky Rubio is like a big fat Walleye swimming just below the surface of the lake, ready to be caught. I would get my hook in the water fast, because as soon as this guy hits the NBA, everybody is going to be trying to catch him.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

James

Hello Barry,

I don’t think the candidate you’re looking for exists. :) Anyone who is TRULY skilled at this “social media” stuff wouldn’t have been able to deal with the BOREDOM of a BA and 5 years experience at an ad agency. lol

I could be wrong though. I look forward to the selection.

Oh, and yes I’m a real person LOL.

Hello all,

My computer has been running slowly the past few days. I’m not quite sure
what’s going on. If I’m browsing the web or messing around with some desktop
programs the computer lags badly and load time is slower than usual.

I have only followed the tips from http://www.computerrunningslow.org

Has anyone tried those tips?

Thanks in advance

Barry – any chance we can still see the “final” job description? Your link no longer works because the job has been filled. I’m curious as to what the outcome was, but didn’t get a chance to look yet. Thanks!

Jim SofrankoSeptember 14th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Barry-

Interesting experiment using crowdsourcing for your new social media position. Maybe we can help you implement a crowdsourced buying feature of the day, similar to what we are doing with local services, restaurants and events at Groupon? Minneapolis will be launching in October so keep an eye out for us to help you get great deals on one thing to do each day.

I’m late to the party and like Karen followed the link to the job description and it wasn’t there since the job has been filled. It would be a nice courtesy if you linked to it from these comments. It’s a bit of a scavenger hunt and disappointing that the prize at the end was removed. Thanks!
